The Australian Science and Mathematics School (ASMS) is offering an exciting short course extension program for students in years 5 to 7, who have a keen interest in maths.
The Primary Mathematics Extension Group (PMEG) program will be delivered through two after-school sessions and a final session during school hours where participants join our Research Project Expo.
Theme: Numbers in Nature
In the park, through a microscope, or in the mirror, patterns surround us in nature. They form the spiral of a pine cone, symmetry of a leaf and ocean waves.
Participants will be guided by our staff and students to develop an inquiry question and present their learning on a digital poster. Teachers, students, and parents will receive packs of useful resources.
Program Overview:
Session 1:
ASMS staff and students will present our theme, Numbers in Nature. Students learn how maths is present all aspects of our lives, and how to design a poster that conveys mathematical concepts. Explorations may extend to the Golden Ratio (Fibonacci Sequence), Mandelbrot Sets, Symmetry, Geometry, Statistics, Modelling and beyond.
Session 2:
ASMS staff and students will work with participants on the development of their poster. Teachers and parents will gain insight into how student agency in problem-based learning can extend students understanding of mathematics.
Session 3:
Participants showcase their work, celebrate their achievements, and receive their certificate during our ASMS Research Project Expo week.
*Individual students not associated with a school must register with a Parent/Caregiver.
